The various reclining Buddha statues show Siddhartha Gautama lying on his right side.  I found lying on my back with a rolled up towel under my neck, and knees worked best for me.  Perhaps you will find a position that is more relaxing for you.

How long can you maintain your position?

I used to be able to lay as above most of the night, while in an OOBE; however, due to my back injuries I cannot lay on my back more then 15 minutes without severe pain, so I now lay on one side or the other and OOBE from about 8PM to about 2:30AM, then I meditate until 3:30AM, then I start my day.
