I found this a very interesting documentary that really captures the soul of America
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trainwreck:_Woodstock_%2799There are a few different versions of it but the one on Netflix I think did the best job expressing everything
More or less there was fault on all sides:
-The original promoters of Woodstock tried to do this one in 99 - but they commodified it and corporatized it
-They did it on a military base (lol a 180 on the original Woodstock)
-They charged a huge amount to get in (another reversal of the original Woodstock ethos)
-Took people's water + food away then gouged them at the concession stands
-The administrators paid as little as possible for security, clean water, + toilets, so there was a massive failing in all areas
-The bands were totally different. Very materialistic/angry energy compared to the 1960s one
-They built a "peace wall" (lol) and then had artists paint on it to hide the fact it was there for the concert administrators to capitalize ($$$) on the event
-No appropriate trash facilities so garbage piled up everywhere
-The sewers leaked so there was raw sewage overflowing everywhere (which people bathed and swam in)
-Several sexual assaults and other crimes were committed
-There was no shade (military base) so thousands got heat exhaustion in the sun
-MTV was there to capitalize on the event
-There were too many people (pre-cell phones) so attendees got lost over and over
-The head administrator teased a final secret act (but lied and there was none). Pretty skeezy
-The concertgoers ultimately took their resentment out on the event. So the whole thing burned at the end & the riot police had to be called in
Anyway we can summarize that overall it was a lot of fun.
My favorite image of the event is the following
https://i.imgur.com/xNEylPK.jpgThis was one of the sound towers. It's interesting because it was shaped like a big cross. Towards the end (after several explosions and conflagrations were lit), the concertgoers tore the tower down and all sat on it while the flames spread
Such an interesting event
That image, yup... that's America's religion right there
