GWV Logo Designs

Original GWV bicycle wheel logo

I have been working on a logo for the GWV.  Maybe this will work.  What do you think?

While working on a GWV logo that would embrace Christianity without rejecting Buddhism I examined a few cross ideas.  Then, this cross that has a circle in its center could be incorporated into the chakra motif which is common in Buddhism to represent the Noble Eightfold Path.

GWV cross + 8-fold dharma wheel, with a lotus in its center for the opening of the heart chakra, with a classic dharma wheel inside of that, which is small and not too offensive to the fundamentalists who are known for burning mystics at the stake.

I was not so fond of the all of the lines and circles.  I just wanted to incorporate the cross into the 4 Noble Truths, and Noble Eightfold Path.

Here I down play the Hindu-Buddhist aspect, and emphasizing the Christian component.

This is an attempt to develop a Western Buddhist Dharma Wheel, which has the cross incorporated into it.

Because the GWV wishes to emphasize that, while no religion owns the religious experience, all religions attempt to provide a set and setting for the religious experience.  So, last night, and this morning, I developed a Coexistence Logo to honor that.

Here is the same logo as above with some color added to it.  Color really helps it to stand out.

Explanation of the GWV's Coexistence Logo.  There a numerous variations of the Coexistence Logo.  Some of them emphasize political parties, some of them imbed homosexuality, and some of them emphasize the Abrahamic religious, while deemphasizing the Asian religions.

The GWV is all about leading a disciplined, rigorous self-aware, contemplative life that is dedicated to cultivating the religious experience.  We are also all about accepting that all religions have a context for the religious experience, and in most cases their progenitors were contemplatives who became mystics; however, all religions aggressively market their products and services in competition with other religions, which means in most cases they have lost sight of the contemplative life, and thus religious experience.

Therefore, the GWV chooses not to emphasize homosexuality, not that we are homophobic, but sexual orientation is simply not an issue for a religion that emphasizes discipline.  We do not care what your preferences are.  We would prefer that you, as a follower of the GWV, will simply engage in discipline and safe-sex practices.

Really cool. I liked the two last cross-based designs the best.

... But for the record, the bicycle wheel one is already a classic. In my opinion.

Thank-you, mapeli.  I was not happy with the earlier dharma wheel, so I improved it below.

I have no problems with the design except for the cross itself. It signifies sufferings and based on the wrong assumption that the death of Jesus that save mankind. It does not compute for me and it's just my opinion only. I do like the one that Jesus is meditating though. Cheers

Thank-you, Sam, for expressing your opinion.  I agree with what you say about Christianity, which relates to John 3:16, as it is commonly mistranslated as: "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son." However, in my opinion all religions have deeply flawed belief systems, which they tend to support with equally deeply flawed translations of their own literature, which I am not at all interested in, or intend, to validate by embracing the coexistence symbol.  My point is to show that most religions have a contemplative component, which is the holy life; which produces genuine mystics, which is holiness; therefore, no religion owns the religious experience, nor has better access to it than any other.  So, I hold no religion above any other.

Nonetheless, within the context of the 4 Noble Truths of Buddhism, the cross of Christianity, and Jesus' suffering, could be seen as symbolic of the first Noble Truth; and since I take Jesus the Nazarite, as the Maytria Buddha, then, in this context, the cross should be especially relevant to contemplative Christians.  For me, the cross represents how every religion marginalizes its mystics, and proves that their priesthood are the frauds that they are.

With an effort to make the GWV's logo have greater appeal, and therefore broader acceptance, and thus a better chance at endurance, I have thought it would be useful to have the name "Great Western Vehicle" in a number of writing systems, most importantly: Greek, Arabic, Mandarin and Devanagari.  If anyone knows of a reliable source, then please let me know, as writing systems were not a field of my study.

I updated the GWV logo design to incorporate the lingam in place of the I, but I retained the five pointed star in a circle for Pre-Christian European religious movements as represented by Wicca today.  Are there any objections or recommendations?

well, I find the "COEXIST" logo a bit new-agey for my taste, and not necessarily relevant to mysticism. I also think that bicycle wheel logo you made was genius - a 100% simple picture, but in it a profound modernization of the dhamma wheel from 2,500 years ago.

although if we're artistically challenged, why not just use an image of one of the saints, like st. francis? or a good photo of someone, like ramana maharshi?

Well, the GWV is all about recording and documenting the mystics of the past, present and future, regardless of their religion, culture, race, etc.  This is why the GWV COEXIST logo works for me, because it recognizes the mystical origins of all religions, even if they have all been corrupted by pretentious hypocrites.
I also think that bicycle wheel logo you made was genius - a 100% simple picture, but in it a profound modernization of the dhamma wheel from 2,500 years ago.
Thanks, it is not gone, just other logo work continues.

Well, I have a problem with using any single saint as an icon for the GWV, because it leads to obsessing over one mystic over another, which typifies the deeply flawed mainstream religions of today.  We could do what SRF did and produce a pantheon of mystics as our logo.  It is more work for me, but if it inspires people to participate, then it can be done.
