Mazzy Star another proto-mystic
« on: October 27, 2013, 03:46:20 PM »

I have found the lyrics of the music of Mazzy Star, for me, falls into the same category as some of the music of Emily Maguire and Lucinda Williams, which we have discussed under another thread.  The two pieces that I have in mind are:
Fade Into You and Into Dust
Her song "What If" is a bunch of hypothetical ideas that the world could be be a different place, for better or for worse. It's about possibilities. It's all upside down, inside out. It's nonsense that makes sense somehow. I take it to mean that the world could go in any direction at any moment, nothing is permanent, there are so many variables. See lyrics below.
It is certainly true that What If? by Lucinda Williams; and Who Knows Where The Time Goes... and Believer, and Woke Up by Emily Maguire certainly have the odd juxtapositions of words and phrases that suggest that the world could be a different place if...; however, I think their lyrics are more than that.  It seems to me that their lyrics are more poetry, than music, and their poetry reveals that these singer song-writers are proto-mystics, who have a special vision into the world that the average person does not have.

Yes, they do, don't they.

I'd like to hear your interesting views on what you think this special vision of the proto-mystic is. You have this superior talent for articulating just about everything.

Do you think that poetry set to music is a superior way of expressing universal truths vs. instrumental music?

The special vision of the proto-mystic is what is often times called delusional, except there is a wisdom in that "delusion."  Typically the psychotic, and the proto-mystic know that there is something deeply wrong the world, but when they try to describe it in speech they are typically ignored, shunned or institutionalized, or medicated.  However, if the proto-mystic is talented poetically or musically, then they write it into music, and people go out and buy millions of copies of their music.

A mystic's musings are best consumed by the masses in the form of music.  I am, however, a-musical.  However, I would not say that vocal music is superior to instrumental music.  In fact that reminds me of another proto-mystic musician.  Please see the thread Tous les Matins du Monde - Marin Marais.
