I've been slowly working through Robert Bruce's book(s) and wanted to share this as I felt he made some very tangible discoveries in the area of energy work that would be good to share / promote.

He developed this method while working with a blind person over the computer (communicating with a braille computer) who had an interest in meditation and OOBEs. The blind person couldn't do visualization type meditation exercises, so Bruce started experimenting with touch based exercises instead.

When he did this he realized how much better the tactile exercises were than the vision based ones, and realized they were worth promoting. I myself have been trying his exercises over the past 6 months, and have had some interesting results. For example, I would normally feel sensations in the hands and feet while sitting, but with his methods I have spread the vibrations up through the limbs, and also felt tangible energy moving up the spine - which is something I had not encountered before.

To summarize it in the briefest possible way, he imagines tactile (touching) sensations on different areas of the body. So for example he will imagine a paintbrush brushing up the hands or being brushed up the arms... or a wet loofah washing over the back or up the spine... and so forth. This awareness work seems to help stimulate the flow of energy and develop the facility of the spirit.

I wonder how a layman who experimented with these things would interpret them... as they seem to be very concrete evidence of the spirit. At the same time, prejudices and prisons of belief would be the chief obstacles preventing many from trying these simple exercises.

Here is Bruce's book if anyone else is interested in these ideas (I am still working through it myself):

Hey Alexander,

These exercises remind me of pranic breath work done in various yoga lineages: hatha, raja, kriya. In these one imagines 'prana'/energy moving along the spine.

I used to do similar exercises found in robert monroe's hemisync tapes.

I believe i've read a bit of that book by robert bruce in the past but don't remember the details. Were there breathing exercises employed during the "brushing" or was it simply tactile stimulation?

He has one important one that he calls "energy raising" which is a combination of breathing and body awareness. In that one, he imagines the tactile sensation starting at the feet and slowly going up the whole of the body to the top of the head on the inbreath - then tracing it down from the crown to the base chakra with the outbreath.
