Fruit of the Contemplative Life
Fruit of the contemplative life: => Art of the Mystic => : Jhanon December 22, 2013, 12:15:33 AM

I may post my Pandora radio station at some point, but for now I am going to just post the songs which touch me most. I find this music encourages contemplation, rewards a contemplative life, and has an all over contemplative feel. For example, if I meditate earnestly, and contemplate earnestly, I often run into a song that lays a soundtrack for it and reflection on a deep intuitive level seems to happen. Then Kundalini rushes down my spine as confirmation.
Here is the first one from Brian Eno - "Always Returning" (hint, hint, Jhananda--lol)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upgu3xddTdE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upgu3xddTdE)
I have some kind of very deep connection with music. Maybe all humans do. I am extremely grateful for it. Without it, I may not have found my way to this point.
-
Thank-you, Jhanon, for posting your music here. I enjoyed listening to it very much. Normally I just listen to the charismatic sound. I find it the most soothing music I have ever heard.
-
Here is a new one by the artist from Portland, Oregon you have heard another song of. This artist is truly gifted. I mentioned this song in today's blog post. Remember to bump up the quality with the "gear" settings in bottom right corner.

Thank-you, Jhanon, for posting your music here. I enjoyed listening to it very much. Normally I just listen to the charismatic sound. I find it the most soothing music I have ever heard.
Jhananda, my friend, it is the least I can do for you. It is truly the least I can do for you. I am glad you like it. It is my thought that because I derive so much pleasure and kundalini from music, that the charismatic sound may soon end up to be my "favorite" or most easily developed of the charisms. I hope to see the charismatic sound develop more, soon. I only have the faint ringing at most times, and it is not that soothing. Perhaps as experiences accumulate, it isn't necessarily that it develops to be "more" during daily life, but that it reminds of the ecstasy that we've experienced with it during meditation. Almost like a "flashback" from psychedelics. Which, by the way, those can be quite powerful. Or perhaps the more we traverse the jhanas, the more quickly the charismatic sound develops in daily life when we place our attention on it.

Powerful, flowing, and deep.

I am listening to the music right now as I type. Very nice. I did not know about the gear. Thanks.

You may find the idea of the experience of the charisms is only what we bring to the experience. So, if the charisms to you are only a quirky collection of odd sensations that occur when you meditate, then that is all they are going to be. Whereas, if you bring to the charismatic experience the sense that you are in the presence of the sacred, call it god, holy spirit, shakti, or whatever, then the bliss component arises (piiti), then the joy component arises (sukha), then the charismatic contemplative experience becomes the religious experience of ecstasy.

You are right. For a reason I think I have begun to understand, I only experience the ecstasy while listening to music such as what I have posted here. Even though the effects/charisms are far more powerful in meditation, it is as if some kind of barrier is down while I listen to music. And as a result, is infinitely more enjoyable. I also receive revelation/insight through music. This morning, the following is the song which did it.
Sunlounger - "Sunny Tales (Chill Version)"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQtakHByDJs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQtakHByDJs)
I was reading some Rumi when this song came on. Just before it came on, the subtle experience/feeling of revelation/insight began. It's like a train leaving the gate and gaining momentum. It's not thinking, because it's too fast and too intelligent to be thinking. There is no volition involved, other than that of surrender.
What I was reading was about "absorption in God" and past and future veiling us from God. I have hesitantly used the word "God" few times in my life, but bare with me as I do moving forward because it just seems to fit.
When in the beginning of the song the kind of electronic sound that darts from left to right ear began is when it started to shoot intensely pleasant and "alive" kundalini sensations through the body. And there's just this knowing that, forgive me for saying this in this way, but it's like God/Universe/Cosmos/Emptiness/Shakti is experiencing itself through what I was experiencing. I've had this feeling many times before. It doesn't come from any thought. I remember the most vivid experience was while making music. I was listening to what I had created, while I was creating more, and this kundalini experience started again. Then this song just poured out. I had no idea what I was doing. I wasn't thinking about it. I was just blissed out in ecstasy, not resisting whatever the body would do--as long as I could stay with the ecstasy. I wasn't even doing it.
The insight/intuition is that "I" am sitting with God, and you're both appreciating this ultra sublime moment. I would give anything to feel that at all times, and indeed I have given much up already. I don't have the elegance in words to adequately express this. I hope one day I will. This I do know, is that there is something in these music experiences to be utilized for allowing union and ecstasy to arise in meditation.
I think it is surrendering and uniting the experience with the experiencer. I think that is what must be done. I've taken a snapshot of how that happens/feels during this last experience this morning. I hope to activate it during meditation a little bit later.

I try to check in every day while I am catching up on research and writing. I enjoyed listening to the music that you provided a link for. I enjoyed the music; and I used music for years as a vehicle of inspiration. I know that it can be used as a stimulus for the religious experience, and I have suggested even that we consider incorporating one or more musicians into a satsang-like environment to prepare people for entry into the religious experience. The problem with music in that environment is it can all too easily dominate the set and setting, and erode the meditation experience, which is the vehicle to get beyond the first stage of the religious experience.

INSPIRATION! I just yesterday re-realized how vital that becomes for the "spirit sensitive", such as those of us at the GWV. If I have no inspiration, I simply can't get my ass off the couch! The inspiration must come first, otherwise it feels like I drag and drag this heavy burden on my shoulders. I wonder if true inspiration, which I frequent these days, is a charism more easily accessible to ordinary humans.
I find listening to a suitable song (like the one I am about to post) before and during the first 10 minutes of a meditation is tremendously useful for set, setting, and inspiration.
-
The following song, if I remember correctly, was on a Buddha documentary I watched a few years ago. It (both documentary and song) might have been what re-inspired me to study the Buddha again, and deepen my commitment to meditation. About two years ago, I happened across it on one of my Pandora stations. What a sublime moment that was. I still (right now), get rushes of energy through the body from listening to it. Every hair on end in anticipation of being Home again...

(Despite constructing many webpages in HTML, on this forum I'm actually having difficulty determining how to make HTML links that simply have the artist and title as the link (instead of the address). Can anyone help me out?

The actual title of this song is "Adagio From Fantasy For A Gentleman" but this video is more representative of how I interpret it.

I agree with what you say here Jhanon. I surely have been in need of inspiration in these past days. I have recently started to revisit music as one of those sources. I think I slowed down on listening to music a while ago because I found it distracting trying to find music that uplifted or relaxed me, but lately it has been nice.
Its funny that you brought up trying to change the names of the links because I just spent my morning trying to figure out the same thing so I could send my friend a custom named link. I had no luck sadly :(, but I know its possible.
Thank you for sharing your music with us all. I enjoyed the various instruments of Drala - "Home Again" very much.
-
Glad to hear I've been helpful to you, Rougeleader. I've also found reading about mystics, writing about mysticism, and talking about mysticism to be very inspiring. Basically, anything that relates to what we talk about here I find inspiring--such as music. But not just this kind of music. In the past I've used Dubstep, Progressive Electro House, Trip Hop, and many other kinds of music to inspire and motivate.
Normally, with html, you can make a custom link this way:
<a href="url">Link text</a>
And I would suggest making some Pandora stations. That's how music really blew up for me about 4 years ago. What kind of music do you like or are you looking for? Artist, song, or genre? I can make you one and send it to you so all you have to click and see how it works (if you haven't already tried it). It's free if you don't mind occasional ads, but I pay for it so that I don't have them.
One last thing worth mentioning. As I listen to the music I've been posting here (which is what I primary listen to these days), I often feel as though I am retiring. I somehow, perhaps intuitively, perhaps just imagination, feel the burden of all my past lifetimes bearing down on me. But at the same time, it is as if I am saying goodbye to them all, to everything....
Always a pleasure to interact with you, friend.

I always have this beautifully mixed sound recording of the wind playing in the background as I work on the computer. It helps calm the mind. What is really interesting about the sounds of nature is that you never get tired of listening to them. In contrast to this, we eventually tire of listening to music no matter how great we think it is. Imagine listening to Beethoven's 9th for 8 hours; you'd never want to listen to it again. I rarely listen to the classics anymore, I've worn them all out.

http://youtu.be/Qg7L0OQiN78 "Beyond the Veil" by Lindsey Stirling
Lindsay's music has given me pure ecstasy for about a year straight. Her music is a blending of classical violin and dub-step. There is something uniquely mystical about this, as the violin feels heavenly and divine and the dub-step feels as though it wells up from the depths. The violin leans toward eternalism and the dub-step toward annihilationism, but the two together throw me right back into middle earth of being human, the middle path.
You will also notice the heightened mystical quality of the video and in many ways it moves through the Jhanas, from subtle into a full blown vision of the cosmos. There is spiritual symbolism and nature mysticism throughout. By the 3 minute mark those of you who have taken a pleasant shroom trip will feel right at home. Keep in mind the Buddha taught that we can take rebirth in heavenly realms that are like extended garden parties with music and sensual delight, lasting longer than a single expansion and contraction of the universe. Ms. Stirling may be a conduit for the devas. Enjoy.
-
Thank-you, trjones, for introducing me to music of Lindsey Stirling. I enjoyed both her music and her video very much. I concur, her music and video indicate that she has access to some of the stages of the religions experience (samadhi).
-
Yes that is likely. She is a devout Latter Day Saint from Utah who is public about her ethical standards. I would imagine she has samadhi somewhere along her karmic life-stream.
-
I enjoyed the first couple Lindsey Stirling songs I heard, but no longer enjoy her music. I agree with your explanation of dubstep and violin.
Lately, music has been less for pleasure and more for protection. Currently, there is almost never silence or even quiet in my daily life. And it has made me aware just how sensitive I've become to the insanity of humanity.
I primarily listen to my energy, wave, ambient stations because they keep me centered and calm.
Michel, I agree with your comments about nature and music. However, I frequently hear a song I like and will listen to it for 6 hours a day, and up to 5 days. Not so much lately, for various reasons.
I will endeavor to add more music when I find the time.
-
Aum Namah Shivaya: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SONGcgo7TOk
I also enjoyed Lindsey Stirling when I was first heard her music. I have also since lost interest in her.
-
Pretty good, Alexander. For some reason, I'm not enjoying it as much I honestly think I should. Hahahaha. I wonder why that it is.
I also wonder why we both enjoyed Lindsey Sterling in the beginning, and then lost interest in her later. I know people are always making fun of "hipsters", saying they think they're cool because they like stuff before others do. And I often get lumped into this. But, I've honestly found that I lose interest in things as they grow popular, or become influenced by popular tastes.
Take Lindsey Sterling, for example. I really enjoyed the first couple songs I heard of her, and this was when her few songs on YouTube had very few views. And without knowing she had become popular, I heard her full length album, and I just hated it. It seemed like more of the same, and in the process, it had this watered down effect. Soon after, I discovered she became popular. The same thing happened to me with dubstep, deadmau5, and numerous other artists and genres. I honestly would like to enjoy the music on the local radio, because it would be convenient. But, good God! That music is awful. And all they do is play the same thing over and over. How can anyone stand that!?
Sorry, I needed to get that out. Because when I talk about it with people in-person, they can't help but make a hipster joke.
-
Here is one similar to what Alexander just posted. I've begun to lose interest in it, but at one point I very much enjoyed it for a long period of time. Wait, no, I was wrong. I just listened to it again, and it's blasting kriya down my body.
Sutra Rhythms - "Visions of Zen"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fOLj40Az-s
And here is one more that I recently shared on my FB. It's very short yet beautiful. This is another of those songs that make me feel like I'm retiring from human life.
Ólafur Arnalds - This Place is a Shelter
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBM8_8DnPDo&feature=youtu.be
Speaking of retiring, here is a very childish poem that song inspired me to write about being an "old soul" and retiring. I wrote it while listening to that song a few days ago.
Child-like Poetry of the Elder Soul
The old soul lays down their distractions and toys,
growing weary of dysfunction and noise.
Its flowering spirit rejoicing in despair,
no longer interesting itself in worldly affair.
The burning of passion begins to smolder,
growing tired and all the more older.
And there's declining desire for the fire,
the attachment to its warmth illustrating its dire,
Watching the worldly grasp and amass,
remembering all the suffering it brought in the past,
It looks back wearily at the long path prior,
shedding every desire but a longing to retire.
(Yes, this is how I work. I disappear from something for a while, and then blow up all over it. What I mean is that it is normal for me to disappear from something, like this forum, and then if I'm really keen on it, I'll come back with an explosion of activity.)
-
I'm trying to think of what made me lose interest in her. I suspect we both picked up on the same thing. It's also more serious to me than, "Oh, she's popular, I can't listen to this anymore."
I think that miserable people make the best music: and I intuited that all the attention she got made her lose the austerity/gravity she had. So what she gathered before her popularity, she's lost and can't get back.
-
I liked Ólafur Arnalds - This Place is a Shelter (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBM8_8DnPDo&feature=youtu.be) very much, thank-you, Jhanon
-
Nice tune, Jhanon. I especially like the visuals of the person alone in the boat on open water facing the light coming through the clouds.
I think that miserable people make the best music...
Poignant observation, as usual, Alexander. I bet you would make a dreadful composer of music. lol
-
I'm glad you guys liked the music. And yes, I'm also inclined to agree with Alexander.
Adversity and suffering generally inclines humans toward open-mindedness and creativity, like how the path of enlightenment does, no?
-
This one....
As soon as it comes on, as the volume builds, the entire immaterial tactile sense vibrates increasingly in anticipation. It's like a rocket ship building power.
Then the first piano stroke comes, and it blasts energy down the spine, radiating shock waves every few inches, and the heart chakra aches. Every single stroke tells a 1,000 stories, and memories not remembered, yet felt. Pain. Tears. Throat Chakra pushing and pressing. But happiness. The "cheering/singing" sounds hit the crown, showering everything below. Saying, "it's almost over. It's almost over. Just a bit further", like to cheer on an exhausted marathon runner of life, who has one goal only, under which all else is organized.
Eluvium - Don't Get Any Closer
http://youtu.be/qKyMDjFxIQ8
There are few, if any, Eluvium songs that don't touch deeply for this body of bodies. It appears he has pioneered a new genre, which is a mixture between "ambient" and a dirge (which is the kind of music that spirit always leads me to make when I make music). The genre is called "Drone."
I have strong suspicions that Eluvium is a mystic. He lives in Portland, OR. His music is slowly becoming known and appreciated, yet very quietly. It almost seems his music is a calling to genuine mystics, or people who are ready to retire. I have a strong feeling about this, that his music could be a tool for gathering others who are suffering and ready to retire. I can't imagine any other kind of individual who would take pleasure in his style. How can every song speak so deeply to me? Deeper than any music I've ever heard.
-
Thank-you for the link. I have been listening to Eluvium's music for a long time.
-
More than a year? I'm not sure what you mean by "a long time." I make the distinction because I'd like to know if my hypothesis about Eluvium being appealing mystics and pre-mystics has any credence.
-
God, I love this song so much. It's been making me surge with energy and tears for over 24 hours. What did I do with those 24 hours? I let the inspiration of this song flow through me, and it created something beautiful and unique. I may share it someday, but it is rather personal to my family. For now, here is the song.
I love Eluvium. Eluvium must be a mystic for mystics. His music touches me so deep. It brings back all the greatest experiences I've had of Light, Love, Energy...HOME.
Eluvium - "Covered In Writing"

I think....I think I'm going to start creating movies with his music that detail my mystical path for YouTube. It's through the heart that the message travels, anyway.

Is there rules against profanity? I've been using a lot lately.
No, there are no rules against profanity. I am concerned about some of your posts, however. I notice you experience very different moods. You move from elation in one post, to being very domineering, to feeling dejected. In my experience with emotions what I did was destroy my self-indulgence and excuses. I became very harsh in reference to myself. Not that my emotional life was harmed when I did this; on the contrary, it became more refined than ever. But, that is how I developed consistency and equanimity.
-
I'm not sure what to say. On the outside I am consistent in mood. But I'm getting assaulted the last few days, yeah. I don't really know how to explain it. I've been spending a lot of time alone.
You're accurate that it is self-indulgence.

Doesn't it just make you feel like something big is about to happen? It's suspended suspense. It's exponentiating momentum. It's a flower in perpetual bloom.

I am becoming convinced that drone music like Eluvium's attracts mystics of this age. Look at the comments on this song, which isn't even the most mystical of his songs.

I've mentioned before that music corresponds with moods. It's a powerful tool for set and setting, allowing one to see beyond stubborn blockades of the identity. As part of a writing project, I thought it would be interesting to see my own progression in music and what each one corresponded with. So, I listened to songs of each genre of which I had the most affinity toward, and described what I felt. Note that each genre does not contain any "pop versions" of the genre. Lindsey Stirling's latest work would be an example of moving past quality art into "pop." Additionally, note that only songs which facilitated kundalini response have been provided. In other words, I followed kundalini as it progressed through these genres over the span of 7 years--having no idea where it was taking me.
What Friends Liked - No idea what is going on (only genre with no kundalini present.)
Rap - Anger that what is going on is not okay.
Chill/Downtempo - Everything is pathetic and depressing.
Dubstep - Annihilation of all useless acquisition.
Electronica - Intuition that something of value is underneath it all.
Jazz/Reggae - Everything is not fine, but attempt to enjoy things as they already are anyway.
Tripstep - Identification of remaining hindrances and exploration of the unknown.
Trip-Hop - Rabbit holes revealed, and explored.
Deep Dubstep -Annihilation of additional surface.
Progressive House - Value discovered and identified.
Dark Dubstep - Annihilation of hidden surface levels.
Ambient - Resting in identified value.
Drum n Bass - Purification of remaining surface in progress.
Electro-Swing - Enjoying what is already purified.
Drone - Final refuge identified and worked toward.
(I've studied the biographies of the most influential artists. Also, I've studied the comments provided on the artist's songs on YouTube. There is an obvious progression observable in the genre's. In other words, it is likely that pioneering artists of these genre's have the corresponding description in mystic understanding.
For example, the following song is from the genre dubstep, which was described as "annihilation of useless acquisition." It is preceeded by "Everything is pathetic and depressing" and proceeded by "intuition (knowing) of something of value is underneath it all." The song is called "Knowing" by Distance...

Oh, if I fall short of the goal, if I could just make music in heaven and cultivate charisma further, that would be just fine.
Sidenote: I'm changing the definition of "charisma" back to what it's supposed to be. In, of, or emanating charism(s).

Lately, piano has been hitting me hard. It feels like "masterpiece" when I listen to it. And, I think--pardon the seeming arrogance--that i feel like I am working on my own masterpiece which is why I resonate with this kind of music lately.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFWS3cfz7OE this song and video are powerful, a death scene in which various scenes are flashed before the eyes of the individual, and the feeling that it is not yet time to give it all up and fade into oblivion. I have heard of some guys hitting a point where it's complete destruction of the self, and not being able to give up on that final bit of grasping. Not something i know about, but it might resonate :)

Deep meditation is essentially stages of effacement of the identity until the final stage is complete destruction of the self. From experience once the self has been annihilated in deep meditation, then one returns as a living embodiment of cosmic consciousness, or god-self, or holy spirit, depending upon your cultural references.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MF_6n-0Obs i think you guys may like this one, it's a bit similar to eluvium but it produces deep contemplation in me, one of those situations where you kind of zone out beyond thought and the body and just feel awe for being alive. It makes tears run down my cheeks, oh what a gift this is, to exist is wonderful.
Another one which produces a great feeling of awe and mystical rapture in me is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcL4J0pzlAg - this song feels very holy, purifying and invigorating. Enjoy :D
