jhana verses jnana
« on: November 23, 2014, 04:39:04 PM »
Yesterday I received a very interesting email from someone who forwarded to me a dialog between someone and a jhana yoga teacher.  The dialog sounded a great deal like what those who experience jhana, so I thought I would open a thread for a discussion of parallelism between jhana and jnana.  The email included the following links:

Jnana links:

I don't have time to read much, but from what I have read--this sounds like what we experience here in jhana. Due to their perspective of yoga, it's helped me see into curiosities I've had. Such as why some nimitta pearls are white, some are black, and so on. It's time to meditate, so I will come back. Good find.

I found this to be quite insightful. It's from the first link.

"RAPTURE

During meditation, you get rapture or ecstasy. It is of five kinds viz., the lesser thrill, momentary rapture, flooding rapture, transporting rapture and all-pervading rapture. The lesser thrill is only able to raise the hairs of the body (like the goose skin). The momentary rapture is like the productions of lightning, moment by moment. Like waves breaking on the seashore, the flooding rapture descends rapidly on the body and breaks. Transporting rapture is strong and lifts the body up to the extent of launching it into the air. When the all-pervading rapture arises, the whole body is completely surcharged, blown like a full-bladder."

Same page, I also found this. It hit home..

"The mind that is overcome by sloth and torpor is unwieldy. Obsessed by worry and flurry, it does not repose, but flirts about."
