Good things happen to you after a Jhana experience?
« on: May 26, 2015, 01:50:52 AM »
Hi,

I came across a post on a different forum where a long-term meditator says that he feels extremely lucky and good things start happening to him after being absorbed in jhana for a while, "I noticed shit just happening perfectly for me".

For example he would meet random people out of blue that could help him get closer to his goals.

I'm curious to know if this is a common experience?

Welcome, im2tyerd, to this forum.  Yes, I often have had the experience of serendipities, and I have experienced jhana every time I meditated for the last 40 years.

the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.
However, I have also found that some people are frightened by me, so I think some people react negatively to the aura of power and energy that tends to be emitted by one who meditates deeply.  While others seem to be attracted to that power and energy.

The most trouble that I have had has been with Buddhist monks, priests, and meditation teachers, and shaman who have not learned to meditate deeply.
There is no progress without discipline.

What kind of stuff happens to you bodhimind?

Is it different to being an opportunist? Do you go out looking for things like this to happen or do they just happen without intention?

I would imagine that on a subconscious level these are things you actually want to happen? Law of attraction at play.

This kind of thing really motivates me.

Sometimes it happens on an intuitive level. I sometimes know things will work out, and they do. I remember that Jhanananda always talked about following one's intuitive guide and I think that is how I feel with mine. It can be things such as a person with the right skills appearing suddenly to solve a problem, or perhaps thinking of certain things (premonitively) and events/people appear in front of me. Or perhaps synchronicities. I try not to get hung up in any of it though, because what matters more is following the N8P.

I feel that the "law of attraction" thing is more of a skewed understanding of New-Age thinking rather than a real phenomenon though. The belief that you can make things happen by sheer will is may perhaps be a siddhi of some kind (known in Hinduism as Prākāmya). Instead, from my limited experience (correct me if I'm wrong), I believe such phenomena to be part of a coincidence as a result from knowledge from intuition instead.
