Sutta evidence for OBE
« on: September 20, 2017, 08:04:24 AM »
This is just a little stanza which I came across today which describes mastering a body in the fine material realms. Taken from MN 12.6 Mahasithanda Sutta (Lion's Roar)

"And he will never infer of me according to Dhamma: 'That Blessed One enjoys the various kinds of supernormal power: having been one, he becomes many; having been many, he becomes one; he appears and vanishes; he goes unhindered through a wall, through an enclosure, through a mountain, as though through space; he dives in and out of the earth as though it were water; he walks on water without sinking as though it were earth; seated cross-legged, he travels in space like a bird; with his hand he touches and strokes the moon and sun so powerful and mighty; he wields bodily mastery even as far as the Brahma-world.'

As we know, the Brahma worlds are also described as the fine material realms, beyond physicality. Therefor, it is possible from this physical domain to control a body beyond the physical spaces.  Additionally, this most likely infers that the super normal powers of moving through walls ect, is in fact experienced during the OBE. Hence why the super normal powers can be quite confusing for those without knowledge of OBE, and usually dismissed. Furthermore, I have found that the super normal are usually described right after the description of the manomaya, or OBE.

Probably obvious to a lot of you here, but helpful for newcomers.

Yes, Benj, this is a clear example of the OOBE in the suttas.
There is no progress without discipline.
