Yes, I am aware of the use of marijuana among the Shivaites of India. Also, it is commonly used among people today who suffer from PTSD.  I was horribly abused and neglected by my family of origin who were career alcoholics and child abusers.  To treat my PTSD I started abusing alcohol at the age of 10.  When I was about 16 I was introduced to marijuana after I returned to the USA.  I found it a much more civilized intoxicant with much less toxic effect than alcohol, so I switched to smoking marijuana.

After I turned 20 I took up a meditation practice, and I was aware of the Shivaite practice of smoking marijuana to stimulate a spiritual experience, so at the beginning of my meditation practice I used to take a bong hit of Tai stick, then meditate.  After about 6 months I found no more use of marijuana, and enjoyed 45 years of sobriety as a rigorous, self-aware contemplative.

After I moved to Prescott 12 years ago I met a group of intelligent homeless seniors who sat at a picnic table at a local park where we talked politics, social issues, contemplative issues, environment, etc. One of our members would come about 3 times a week and offer us a few puffs from his spliff.  I always graciously declined his kind offer, but after my COPD diagnosis he countered my refusal to partake in his kind offer with, "What do you have to lose now?"

So, having studied ethnomedicine and ethnobotony for 45 years by then I decided to conduct a simple experiment.  I first measured my blood sugar, blood oxygen concentration and blood pressure and pulse, recorded my data, then I took 3 puffs from his spliff, then retook my vitals about 15 minutes later. I found all of my vitals had improved.  Even my blood sugar had dropped significantly, so since then I started having a few puffs of marijuana and even tobacco since every night before bed. It seems to continue to be useful for my health.

It’s the only drug I do these days (other than coffee). I’ve zeroed my sugar, alcohol, and tobacco. It’s legal here in Massachusetts. It’s a great relaxant, and a good aid for imagination and exploring the unconscious. I believe many drugs can have a positive impact - so long as they are done in moderation.

I agree, Alexander, in moderation some mind altering substances can be an aide to health and the contemplative life.  For instance 23 years ago I celebrated 27 years of sobriety with a beer to demonstrate to myself, and anyone interested that my contemplative life had brought me beyond addiction.  It just so happens that I chose Pyramid Apricot Ale, and I happen to have an undiagnosed autoimmune condition known as Reiter's syndrome, or Reactive Arthritis, which comes with periodic flareups, and in 2000 I was having the worst flareup I had experienced.  So, the night I chose to have a single 12oz bottle of this ale my hands were in great pain and nearly just claws.  However, before I had finished the ale all of the pain and stiffness were gone, and I had full mobility in my hands.  At the time I couldn't believe it was the ale, but I definitely noticed the coincidence.  I was free of pain for 3 days before the pain and stiffness returned, when it did I had another one of these ales, and I had another 3 days of freedom from pain and stiffness. Since then I have found the effect is due to a combination of hops and anthocyanin which are both recognized natural antiinflammatories and they work great for me, so I make sure I have 1 12oz container of a very narrow group of ales a day which contain both hops and anthocyanin.

Twenty three years later these ales are not as effective for treating my autoimmune conditions, but they still help so I drink them.  The message is some fermented beverages are effective medicine and should not be ignored, nor should complete abstinence be considered effective for all.

Personally, my favorite mainstream drug is coffee by far!  How would I survive without coffee and chocolate and tea!  I mix all three in the morning before my day of meditation, or work at my last job stocking Walmart books.

But I have had great results with controlled alcohol use for my issues the last five years, as well as heavy metal detoxes, avoiding wearing metal jewelry and of course the air purifiers are helpful.  Many things that I know have helped Jeff as well.

I've heard good things about marajuana as well, including from targeted individuals.

I do hesitate to use it somewhat because I know it can make you lazy.  I try to stick to a rigid meditation routine.  So far alcohol during the night on my retreat has not distrupted my '9-5' meditation routine so I am hesitant to change it.

I happen to have started my day with a mocha everyday for about 30 years.  I don't find it an obstacle at all.

Regarding marijuana, part of the reason why I gave it up on my birthday in 1974 is I found I couldn't motivate myself to do anything after consuming marijuana all day long.  Now fast forward 49 years being terminally ill I definitely find it helps me, and doesn't interfere with my productivity as long as I only smoke it before bed time.

I see what you are saying about marajuana Jeff, at different ages different therapies are needed.  I do love coffee.
I am a big fan of beer but I can't imagine giving up coffee for beer haha.

In the morning I brew Chinese tea leaves, pour it into my coffee pot, and then when I press the coffee I add chocolate.  Those three together keep me going most of the day without needing to make much more coffee.  Ive used this method for 10 years now to get the benefits of tea, coffee and chocolate together.
