What attainments are permanent?

How to ensure that our attainments are permanent?

For example, there are people who make good progress in meditation and experience some states of samadhi, but later slip back to materiality focused life and drop meditation.

I'll be interested to hear what Jeffrey has to say about this.

A couple things come to mind.  For me, self-arising bliss, joy and ecstasy began spontaneously during a period when I was trying to get out of body - doing what I called "trance work" at the time, but which was really just laying down meditation (shivasana).  Once it began, it started to develop and move around my body, gradually saturating it.  By the time Jeffrey introduced me to the teachings on attainment (which gave me a "home" for the phenomena), I'd accepted that this was just the way it is, that "the energy" was (and is) here to stay.

Which brings me to my second thought, that perhaps it depends on contemplative practice from past lives, as to whether or not attainment "sticks" in the early going.  I don't have enough experience working with others to know how common it is for meditators to lose their attainments.  I would imagine that, when they first appear, there is so much pleasure and excitement that anything less is bound to feel like loss and/or failure - and it's sad that someone would give up their practice at that point, even if understandable.  I don't know if there's a magic trick for making it stick - my sense is that putting the time in on the cushion is what does it, and that there are no guarantees around the timing.

For me the take-home of a fruitful contemplative life is the Noble Eightfold Path is a lifestyle that when led leads to fruitful attainment, but we need to continue to lead that lifestyle if we want to retain the fruit there of. On the other hand, in the last 6 years of illness for me disrupted my daily meditation practice in some ways, while being bedridden for most of the last 6 years in some ways just intensified my practiced of lying down meditation. And, I would also agree that effort toward depth in meditation from previous lifetimes certainly pays off in the present lifetime. It seems to have done so for me.

Thanks for this, Jeffrey.  Set and setting, as you mentioned in a recent post.  Long ago we talked about how all the folds lead up to Samma-Samadhi... but that, from the perspective of Samma-Samadhi, the other folds then become a natural part of our daily existence.  In other words, giving rise to (and becoming saturated in) bliss, joy and ecstasy has the effect of conditioning the contemplative to adopt right practices in all the other areas of life.

It does seem like some people do come into their incarnation with an easier time meditating like Jeff or a handful of people I've met.  I guess this must be the result of past life practice?  I'm no expert on it but I would guess that it's related to past life training.

Me personally I just had my first 'true' Kundalini surge a few weeks ago.  Much more powerful than sexual energy.  I posted about it on facebook and discussed it with Jeff a bit.  It lasted almost 3 hours in 30-60 second waves every few minutes.  It was so strong that when I was outside walking in the cold it would overwhelm the sensation of the cold on my body.  It was triggered by thinking about the greatness of Superheros.  I suppose deep identification with any great person or idol could trigger a kundalini surge.  I find that Science Fiction content has a very strong Kundalini triggering effect for me.

Good point, and by learning to meditate deeply one then negotiates higher dimensions of existence upon death.
