Conventional thought used to consider fats like coconut oil to be unhealthy and contribute to heart disease. We now know that this isn’t true. In fact, coconut oil is actually a heart healthy food that can keep your body running smoother in a few different ways.
 
What are the health benefits of coconut oil?

Studies have show that intake of coconut oil can help our bodies mount resistance to both viruses and bacteria that can cause illness. Even more, it also can help to fight off yeast, fungus and candida.
 
Coconut oil can also positively affect our hormones for thyroid and blood sugar control. People who take coconut oil also tend to have improvements in how they handle blood sugar since coconut can help improve insulin use within the body. Coconut oil can boost thyroid function helping to increase metabolism, energy and endurance. It increases digestion and helps to absorb fat-soluble vitamins.
 
Can coconut oil reduce cholesterol?

Coconut oil has a saturated fat called lauric acid, a type of MCT. It has been shown that lauric acid increases the good HDL cholesterol in the blood to help improve cholesterol ratio levels.  Coconut oil lowers cholesterol by promoting its conversion to pregnenolone, a molecule that is a precursor to many of the hormones our bodies need. Coconut can help restore normal thyroid function. When the thyroid does not function optimally, it can contribute to higher levels of bad cholesterol.
 
How does coconut help keep weight balanced?

Coconut fats have special fats called medium chain triglycerides (MCTs). It has been shown that breaking down these types of healthy fats in the liver leads to efficient burning of energy. One 2009 study found that women who consumed 30 milliliters (about 2 tablespoons) of coconut oil daily for 12 weeks not only did not gain more weight, but actually had lowered amounts of abdominal fat, a type of fat that is difficult to lose, and contributes to more heart problems.

Thanks, Sam, for starting this new thread.  I find coconut oil excellent, and have had it regularly in my diet, and have used it for massage oil formulations for 40 years.
There is no progress without discipline.

I use coconut oil as a facial moisturizer to protect against the cold and wind of winter - works great. It seems to help with scaring and wrinkles as well.

Aloha Violet,

Awhile ago, Malia, my partner, read an article about a woman who
witnessed an accident at a gas station. A man was filling a gas
container and it caught fire. His clothing caught fire and before
folks could extinguish the flame, he had burns on his exposed
body.
The woman rushed from her house with a bowl of simple egg
whites, which is pure collagen, then slathered the man's flesh
with it. Later, the doctors at the hospital told her, the man's
skin would heal completely, with no scarring.

So... I get razor burns from shaving and Malia has dark under
her eyes and wrinkles on her hands/face. We started applying
the egg white treatment and it will return your skin ten/fifteen
years younger. I use it after shaving, no burns. I even use it
on the bags under my eyes that appear after too much fun
and they disappear. A nice thing about this treatment is its
cheap and plentiful. Ha, gotta love that!!

Ha,ha,ho,ho, yes... for those of you who can't help smiling,
I've heard all the jokes of having "egg on my face".

That's really interesting Kimo, it's the first time I've heard about egg whites being used as a facial treatment. I have heard about people using chicken excrement though...!

For me personally, I've found that what I put inside my body has the most effect on the outside. When I eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables, my complexion is at its best.

I used Black Cumin Seed oil, Moringa oil and Coconut oil , all in equal parts to treat skin problems. As all skin problems originate from the blood and hence that ultimately leads to the liver which cleanse the blood. For that I use turmeric to cleanse the liver. Just a little knowledge I think all should know. Cheers

Low glycemic sources of potassium

Question:

I have Type 1 diabetes and have to watch my blood sugar very carefully. I want to get more potassium in my diet, but the only good sources I know are bananas, raisins, prunes, and potatoes. Can you tell me some low glycemic sources of potassium that I might add to my diet?

Dr. Wright's Answer:

A food's glycemic index rates the speed at which your body metabolizes carbohydrates and the food's ability to increase blood sugar. Avoiding foods that create too much of an insulin reaction in your body is the key to controlling diabetes. Unfortunately, as you have found, many foods that are rich in potassium also rate high on the glycemic index.

There are other foods that are known to be rich in potassium, but please check with your doctor to make sure they are right to include in your diet, and to get details about how much or how often they should be added.

Sun-dried tomatoes are an excellent source of potassium. So are sweet potatoes, which are on the lower end of the glycemic index. Beet greens, celery, carrots, radishes, tomatoes, Swiss chard, squash, and spinach are other good sources and can be added as your diet permits. White beans or soy beans, seeds, and nuts, (which are also a good source of protein), are high in potassium, too.

Taking a potassium supplement may be your best option if you can't get enough potassium through diet alone. If you are following a low-carbohydrate diet and are not eating at least five to six servings of vegetables every day, make sure you take at least 400 to 500 milligrams of potassium daily.
