Coconut Water

Coconut water is a highly nutritious, cleansing, and refreshing juice that is lightly sweet and packed with B-complex vitamins and minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and manganese. Coconut water is one of the highest sources of electrolytes known. It’s a natural isotonic beverage with the same level of electrolytic balance that we have in our blood. In our body, plasma is what makes up 55% of human blood and coconut water is identical to human plasma, which makes it a universal donor. Some claim that drinking coconut water gives a person an instant blood transfusion. During the Pacific War of 1941-1945, both sides in the conflict regularly used coconut water-siphoned directly from the nut-to give emergency plasma transfusions to wounded soldiers. Coconut water has also shown significant anti-cancer, anti-thrombotic, and anti-aging benefits due to its high cytokinin content. It’s bioactive enzymes help to significantly support digestion and metabolism. Coconut water is low in calories and is an excellent weight loss drink. It also has the ability to hydrate the body on a deep, cellular level making it an essential beverage for athletes and those that live a busy, active life. It also has been shown to help balance pH levels, boost the immune system, and support kidneys in filtering toxins and reducing the risk of kidney stones. Coconut water is highly beneficial for cardiovascular health as it can help to reduce blood pressure and increase healthy circulation. It is also a vitally important drink for those who are suffering with a chronic illness such as migraines, sinusitis, COPD, fibromyalgia, asthma, PCOS, cardiomyopathy, chron's disease, epilepsy, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, parkinson’s disease, hypothyroidism, arthritis, lupus, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Coconut water is excellent for skin conditions and can be applied topically to heal, soothe, and hydrate skin. Coconut water is a universally appealing drink and is considered safe in pregnancy, infants, and the convalescent. Young green coconuts are readily available year-round in tropical regions such as Hawaii, South Florida, Philippines, Bermuda, Jamaica, Brazil, Thailand, and India and more recently coconut water can be found packaged and bottled and available in supermarkets throughout the United States and around the world.

Thank-you Sam, for keeping your health blog going.  I have been drinking coconut water on a regular basis for decades, and find it the most satisfying drink I know of.  I recently stopped drinking coconut water due to a belief that it was too high in carbs; however, the nutritional facts for coconut water suggest otherwise

I agree. Coconut water is my favorite drink. So expensive, though.

What is Milk Thistle?

Milk Thistle is an herbal supplement that detoxifies and protects vital liver functions and more.

Milk thistle has been used for over 2,000 years as a natural treatment for liver disorders. The plant is known in scientific circles as the Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertner (syn. Cardous marianus), but it is more commonly known as “milk thistle,” “St. Mary Thistle,” “Holy Thistle” and “Lady's Thistle.” It is an herbaceous annual or biennial plant belonging to the Asteraceae family that can grow to be ten feet tall with flowers that are red and purple in color.

Milk thistle gets its name from the milky white fluid that comes from the plant's leaves when they are crushed. It is native to southern Europe, southern Russia, Asia Minor, and North Africa, and has also been naturalized to North and South America.

Europeans were among the first to use milk thistle seeds as an herbal treatment for liver disorders. However, the plant's remedial capabilities have been known since ancient times. Milk Thistle was mentioned by Theophrastus in the 4th century B.C. by the name of “Pternix” and it was also referred to by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century A.D. by the name of “Sillybum.” Additionally, in 1744, Von Haller documented the specific use of the plant for liver disorders in its "Medizinischen Lexicon." In more recent years, many authors such as Johann Gottfried Rademacher, Volker Schulz, and Henry Leclerc mention the benefits of Silybum Marianum (milk thistle) when used as a treatment of liver diseases as well as in the treatment of disorders of the bile duct and spleen.

What are the Benefits of Milk Thistle?

Over the past forty years, intensive chemical, pharmacological and clinical research has confirmed the mechanisms of action and therapeutic value of milk thistle in a wide range of human liver-related and non-liver-related conditions. Literally hundreds of modern research studies have confirmed the remarkable ability of milk thistle to protect the liver and the body against virtually all types of damage.

Additionally, the United States National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have catalogued more than 400 scientific studies of milk thistle and its active compounds in their medicine database. These studies reflect what generations past knew and depended on – that milk thistle is one of the most valuable and beneficial herbal remedies and treatments available anywhere in the world.

Today, milk thistle is still one of the most commonly used medicinal plants in the world and is also the number one recommended natural herb for liver health. In fact, in Europe, milk thistle is a prescribed medication. The milk thistle extract is prescribed to treat mushroom poisoning, alcoholic cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, drug and alcohol-induced liver damage and acute viral hepatitis, just to name a few.

Milk thistle extract is used to maintain liver health and to protect the liver from the effects of toxins such as alcohol, a polluted environment or workplace, and a host of liver related diseases.

Thank-you very much for having posted this, Sam. It was kind of you. My doctor practices Ayurvedic medicine and he put me on a supplement to aid my liver. However, it does not contain milk thistle. The key ingredients are: Caper Bush, Chicory, Black Nightshade, Arjuna, Yarrow, Tamarisk: http://www.amazon.ca/Himalaya-Herbal-Healthcare-LiverCare-Economy/dp/B000H87TIG/ref=pd_sim_hpc_7?ie=UTF8&refRID=02DZWXXQF2CXBTRK9V8E

See this product description:

Quote from: Himalaya LivCare

I have advice one of my alcoholic friend to take Liv.52 before but it does not seem to have much effect. There is a kind of plant which I do not know the name but it grows everywhere here seems to be much better. I will take a picture of the plant one of these days and post it here. It may help you. The powdered capsules is sold in Malaysia. If I am there I can buy it for you, if you are interested.

I haven't had a blood test since June of 2014, and I started taking the Liv.52 supplement shortly afterwards. So, I don't know if the supplement is working. However my blood work before taking the supplement was pretty good for a person with end stage cirrhosis. It's near normal, but not completly. I also haven't had a drop of booze since 2011. There is absolutely no craving. I plan to have blood work done in the spring since we are in the middle of the flu season here in Ottawa, Canada. I tend to keep myself isolated from the general public during the winter.

Thank-you for your offer to send me this herbal you mention. It is very kind and considerate of you. I would like to know more about it. So please post whatever you have at your convenience.

When it comes to health my maxim is: "If you want to stay healthy, then stay away from the doctor." LOL. But it's not always true.

Michel, I was once told by a physician that the liver was the fastest regenerating organ of the body.  So, you might be surprised to find your next blood test good.  Otherwise Milk Thistle might be a good plant to make friends with.  Thanks to Sam.
