Gratitude
« on: January 28, 2014, 04:37:20 AM »
I was watching the British TV Series "Sherlock" while taking care of my daughter recently, and I came across an interesting statement. It was from Moriarty, the villain of the Sherlock works. One of Moriarty's acquaintances expressed their gratitude to him, and he said something along the lines of "Your gratitude is worthless to me. It is merely the expression of expectation of future favors." I was shocked, because it seemed to have some validity--at least in everyday expression of gratitude.

Why do I say this? Well, because I was just about to post a general expression of gratitude for the GWV. I think if I am still alive in 5, 10, or even 20 years, I will look back on the moment I was welcomed and educated by the GWV as one of the most fortuitous life-changing events I experienced. Everything from the moral support, to the profound wisdom and knowledge, down to the companionship this group has offered me.

Do I express my gratitude with expectation of future favor? I don't think so, but maybe I'm delusional about it. I know that I hope to always be apart of this sangha as long as its integrity is preserved. That I will be of help to its members. That in the future many of us can meet for retreat in the wilderness. And that many of us will realize arahantship in this lifetime. Maybe we can have a celestial celebration when we've done so and left this realm :) That is what comes to mind when I say I am grateful for you all.

Apologies if this post seems unnecessary or in anyway not the noble message I intended.

If you think about it, there's never been anything like this forum ever before in history. It's something terribly accessible - you literally just click and are on it - but it's also hidden, in the sense that you could stumble across this site but not have the discrimination to appreciate what you've found.

That's so true. I came across Jhananda's videos about 6 months ago, but didn't have the discernment to realize what I had found. One might even argue that the development of discernment is the primary component of the mystic path.

It is also refreshing that I haven't witnessed any one-upmanship, putting down or any kind of major discord from members who've posted more than 10 times. Sure, it's happened before, but this community is rather empty of it currently.

A side note: aglorincz, have you got any more writing for us to enjoy? I loved that one story about the master and teacher. I think it might have been yoga?

Sherlock Holmes was fiction, so both Sherlock Holmes and the villain, Moriarty, were just voices inside the head of Sir Conan Doyle who was an opium addict; nonetheless, there is some truth in the fact that for most people expressions of gratitude are driven by the "expectation of future favors."  I think of my family as an example of this. In your case I do not sense that, after all I have nothing of a material nature to give anyone, and you know that.

Expressions of gratitude are actually quite important for this work, because otherwise all there is on the web about me is nothing but character assassination.  So, expressions of appreciation for this work help others to see its value.
There is no progress without discipline.

If you want to post to this forum, then send me a PM.

Yes, aglorincz, I too enjoyed your writings. I hope you will post more of them in the future.

I'll bring the beer.  Of course when I make it to the celestial realm, I'll have a new liver. Bet I can drink any of you under the table.

Hahahaha--I'm not much of an alcohol type. But then again, based on what I've experienced of celestial realms, I don't think we'll need anything anyway :)
