messiah complex
« on: March 18, 2015, 11:51:27 AM »
There is a possible downfall that can happen for people who meditate deeply.  It is the premature messiah complex. The premature messiah complex is a spiritual crisis, because is the product of an incomplete awakening.

The downfall occurs when the person who meditates to some depth takes themselves far to seriously, and enters into a premature messiah complex.  To avoid a premature messiah complex one needs to be consistently meditating at the depth of 3-4 jhana, where they acquire sufficient loss of identity, and acquire degrees of tranquility and equanimity, that are necessary to avoid a premature messiah complex.

The messiah complex is more common for the person who arrives at the feel-good stage of the first jhana, and never makes it to the second stage of deep meditation that is characterized by the stilling of the mind.  The stages of deep meditation beyond the first stage are just characterized by the the stilling of the mind, but also a loss of sense of self.

This loss of sense of self is also called a non-dual experience.  Non-dualism is essential because the ego is diminished by the non-dual experience, and thus moves the contemplative beyond the pitfall of the premature messiah complex.

There is nothing wrong with being a messiah, but assuming one is a messiah after only attaining the feel-good stage of the first jhana, is premature.  One should not forget that there are 8 stages of deep meditation, and cultivating all of them is essential for full liberation from addictive and other obsessive and compulsive behavior.

When one is fully liberated from addictive and obsessive and compulsive behaviors one is now a messiah.  This means there can be more than one messiah present on earth at a time, so one need not become too obsessed with one's significance after attaining one or more stages of the deep meditation experience.
